A lot of people write while listening to music. Not me. It’s too distracting for my fragile attention span. The only exception is if I continuously hear a particular song in my head as I envision a scene in the book I am working on—like how music plays during certain parts of a movie. Then I’ll play that song repeatedly while I craft the scene.
During those moments, music helps keep me in the zone instead of distracting me from it. However, since I’m not the fastest writer, that one song might stay on repeat for more than an hour. Listening to the same song over and over might drive some people nuts, but it works for me.
Here are some songs that have recently kept me inspired:
“Elastic Heart” by Sia
“Bloodstream” by Stateless
“Cosmic Love” by Florence and the Machine
I combined lyrics from these songs with images that I felt matched the music because, you know…that’s what I do when I have writer’s block or a bout of procrastination.
